A fine Norman motte-and-bailey castle built in 1068 on the site of a former Roman fortress. It is interesting for its two mottes, the only other castle built in this style is Lewes.
The castle was the scene of several battles, most notably during the reign of King Stephen, and King John. In the early part of the 13th-century Lincoln Castle was besieged during what is known as "The Baron's War".
Lincoln Castle has a fine eastern gateway, its parapet walls are some of the finest in the country and offer magnificent wall walks. For over 900 years the interior of the castle has been used as a place of justice, today Lincoln Assize Court is still housed within the castle.
The castle offers the opportunity to experience what life was like in a Victorian prison, and there is a wide annual programme of annual events. These include, Medieval Jousting, The Lincoln Vintage Vehicle Rally, Open-Air Concerts, and throughout each summer on a Sunday after-noon a brass band entertains visitors with all types of music, including traditional band music and tunes from popular shows.
There is a gift shop and restaurant. Delicious cream teas are available.
