About Helpringham

One of the most enduring features of the Fens are its windmills and its soaring church spires. The dramatic spire of ashlar-faced St. Andrew's Church of the 13th century cuts a fine sight towering above the village of Helpringham in an impressive rural landscape. The church is of surprising proportions, with glorious arches and magnificent stained glass. Of its many treasures its font is perhaps the most important, this dates from around C1200, is circular in shape with plain arcading to three sides with the remainder being covered by what is possibly the tree of life. Throughout the centuries St.Andrew's has been left to remain in a state of almost original splendour, the purity of its architecture and adornment are largely due to Richard de Pottesgrave who became rector in 1309, he was also chaplain and confessor to King Edward II. Opposite the church is a War Memorial to those who lived in Helpringham and died during the 20th century World Wars.

The eight sailed windmill at Heckington is well worth a visit, this is the only eight sailed working windmill in England. It covers four floors, all of which are open to public view for a small charge.

Closer to Sleaford on the banks of the River Slea visitors will find picturesque Cogglesford Mill where flour has been produced for over a 1000 years. The mill, in its "Constable" setting has a fascinating history, for apart from milling the building also provided a meeting place for country traders and farmers for many centuries.

Helpringham is a richly rewarding walking area, with walks around old villages and waterside walks giving visitors a lovely glimpse of the regions natural wildlife and variety of scenery. There are regular watering holes, especially the Nags Head which sits serenely at the side of the lovely village green. Helpringham's High Street is pleasant, with a nice mix of sedate properties making it a pleasing place to stroll while deciding which part of the Lincolnshire fens to visit next.

This village is a short distance from the drain known as the South Forty Foot Drain, it is within easy reach of both Sleaford and Boston, and for tourists wishing to travel a little further there is the lovely waterway of the River Welland.
