About Marton

Marton is a sleepy village with a long history. In far off Roman times, a small fort guarded a nearby crossing of the River Trent.

The village can be discovered around 5 miles south of Gainsborough, it has reminders of the days when sailing boats plied their trade along the river and of the romantic era of coach travel. This can be seen in the bright blue anchor dredged from the Trent and now proudly displayed in a prominent village position, and by the Black Swan, an atmospheric 18th century coaching inn which retains much of its former charm and still welcomes visitors. There is also a restored windmill tower to be seen.

At the heart of the village lies an historic parish church dedicated to St.Margaret of Antioch. The building has an interesting embattled roofline graced with intricate pinnacles, it is mostly of Anglo-Saxon and Norman structure with an 11th century tower showing herringbone masonry and set into the outer wall is a Saxon cross shaft. The church has an attractive porch entrance, and once inside there is much to interest the visitor, whilst outside in the quiet, lawned and tree lined churchyard, there are tombs and graves weathered by the storms and winds of hundreds of years. A lofty Medieval market buttercross is sited in the churchyard, this acts as a memorial to the villagers who gave their lives in the two world wars of the 20th century.

Marton offers visitors a pleasant, tranquil place to stay. As well as the features of the village there is plenty of interest in the surrounding countryside, with the fens and waterways of the landscape offering endless fascination. Within easy reach is the City of Lincoln with its famous Cathedral of the fens, and at nearby Torksey, on the banks of the River Trent, there is the impressive sight of ruinous Torksey Castle which remains as a stark reminder of England's bloody Civil War.

Nearby leisure pursuits include golf, fishing, boating, walking and birdwatching.
