About Waddington

This is a town with an illustrious record of service for the R.A.F. A training unit for pilots was first established here early in 1916, this continued until the end of the First World War in 1918 when it closed down. In 1926 it re-opened as the base for Lincoln's 503 Squadron, and has been in operation ever since. The base has a most illustrious record, it has been home to other Squadrons, including 44 (Rhodesia) Squadron. The Victoria Cross was awarded to Squadron Leader John Nettleton, who was with the 44, when he led a day-light attack on a U-Boat factory. More recently, during the Falklands conflict of 1982, Vulcan's from the station flew to the Falklands in what were the longest distance bombing raids carried out by the R.A.F.

Waddington is a bustling town, its modern day history forever linked to the R.A.F of which it is justifiably proud. It's annual air show is a major event on the yearly calendar and is attended by people from all over England. Flying displays and machines do not come much finer than those at Waddington.

Surrounding the town is a wealth of pretty hamlets in a landscape dominated with ancient churches, old inns, windmills, and timeless looking houses and cottages.

In the town you will find good shopping and leisure facilities which includes fishing on the River Witham. There is an excellent choice of accommodation should you wish to make this a longer stay, and there is an array of tempting pubs and restaurants
