About Runswick Bay

Runswick Bay lies at the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, the village is tucked between rising cliffs at the western end of a lovely sweep of sand. It is a place of immense charm, with appealing cottages set within a stone's throw of the sea, overlooking colourful boats slung on grassy banks beside the shore.

This delightful East coast bay has historic roots which can rightfully claim to go back to Roman times. Runswick is in an area full of interest, out of whose historic pages have stepped some of England's greatest sea-farers, including Captain James Cook who was born in the village of Marton and worked at nearby Staithes.

Runswick is a warren of close knit streets running at criss-cross angles. Being well hidden from a main road, it was attractive to the smugglers of centuries ago. Ships, wrecked on the treacherous rocks along the coast continued to be pillaged until well into the 19th-century. Today, the waters are the playground of enthusiastic holidaymakers, who enjoy the many pleasures offered by a beautiful beach, and an unspoilt bay ideal for sailing, swimming and surfing. From the cliffs above the village there are magnificent views towards the headland of Kettleness.

There is a slower pace to be enjoyed here, especially out of season when there is only a small number of permanent residents, as most of the cottages are weekend retreats which are left closed throughout late autumn and the early part of winter. The breathtaking beauty of Runswick is idyllic for a special 'out of season' break, or for a family summer holiday. It's superb location close to the moors and not far distant from the majestic Cleeveland Hills, makes it a perfect destination for sea and country at any time of year.
