Historically this breathtakingly beautiful moors area was an industrial centre for ironstone mining during the 19th and early 20th centuries, a fact substantiated by relics still discovered in the region to this day.
It is a landscape of overwhelming beauty, Rosedale Abbey Village at the centre of Rosedale has pretty cottages and the ruins of a former abbey. These are not as majestic as the hauntingly beautiful Rievaulx abbey, but merely a turret with a spiral staircase - none-the-less, standing next to a church of a later build, the turret tells of a time when a Priory was founded here many centuries ago. The church is a rather sweet Victorian building crownded by a bell in a tiny open brick tower.
The moors provide a paradise for walkers, and the village like many of its ilk relies heavily on the farms scattered across the moors, and tourism for its livelihood.
