Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire.
Looking out across the bay, we could see what appeared to be a lone “mermaid” sitting on a rock amidst the incoming tide. A man with a dinghy is standing nearby, gently splashing her with water as if trying to keep her cool and moist in the searing heat of that August afternoon. Well, we’d probably sunk a few pints of the Bay Hotel’s finest ales, but not so many as to impair our thoughts on whether mermaids really do exist. However, we were curious and went to investigate, so in our shorts we waded out towards the rock on which she was sitting (see next pictures).
