The remains of this once fine castle built by Sir Bertram de Bulmar, Sheriff of Yorkshire in the 12th century and subsequently passed to the Nevill family through marriage, stand today on privately owned land in the same way as the ruins of Brambletye Castle in East Sussex.
The castle has a magical 800 year history, included in its various owners have been two King's. However the castle was in the hands of the illustrious Nevill family for almost three hundred years. In 1382 John Nevill was granted a license to Crenellate and add towers to the already mighty fortress. His son John, following his guardianship of the West Marches, became Constable of the Tower of London, later he received the Earldom of Westmorland. In this position he was pivotal to the ascension of Henry IV in 1399 for which he received the Honour of Richmond and was appointed to the noble position of Earl Marshall of England. When Richard Nevill, Earl of Warwick died in 1471, the family lost their estates.
From this event the history of the castle fluctuated, it passed from the Duke of Norfolk who had used it as a residence, into the hands of the Duke of Richmond. Later it became the home of the Ingram family and subsequently it became the property of the Seymour family.
Following these events, the castle was allowed to fall into disrepair. It now forms a romantic ruin under the care of English Heritage, it stands on private land with its four preserved towers viewed as a landmark from miles around.
Worth mentioning is picturesque Sheriff Hutton village, this lies at the foot of the Howardian Hills and is home to the castle ruins.
