About Yarm

Situated in the heart of the Tees valley, the picturesque town of Yarm has a long and interesting history. It was also highlighted on BBC Breakfast television on Friday 19 January 2007 as being the best high street in England.

During medieval times, Yarm was one of the most important ports on the River Tees, and became home to shipbuilders, rope makers, clockmakers and tanners.

In 1207 King John granted a royal charter for a weekly market and twice yearly
fair. The market no longer exists, but the annual fair is still a big draw into town every October.

Yarm thrived, and with its position as the farthest upstream port that could be reached by sea going vessels, a large tannery grew up handling skins, many shipped direct from New Zealand. The tannery finally closed in the 1980 s

Today the town has no industry, but is one of the regions premier shopping and entertainment centres.

A mix of designer boutiques, restaurants, bistros, pubs and clubs, are squeezed in to, and between some of the many elegant Edwardian buildings in the High Street
