About Guilsborough

Hidden amongst leafy lanes and glorious poppy fields of the undulating Northamptonshire countryside, lies the peaceful village of Guilsborough. Vast agricultural lands dominate the landscape, relieved by the rippling waters of Hollowell Reservoir. The reservoir is widely used for sailing, windsurfing, fishing, and with a rich variety of wildfowl and birdlife, it has become a Mecca for wildlife enthusiasts. The lanes in these parts often echo to the sound of the Hunt, for this is famous hunting country, for decades members of the aristocracy and Royalty have hunted this beautiful region.

The houses all around are mostly of ancient glowing, mellow stone, with tiny leaded windows. One such house, found close-by is enchanting Coton Manor. Picturesque by any standards, this handsome 17th-century house is further complimented by the surrounding 10 acre garden initially laid out by the present owners grandparents during the 1920's. It is an English garden at its very best with glorious old roses and clematis, rambling the walls of the house.

Arranged on a gently sloping site, the garden looks to be totally un-contrived. From the beautiful York stone terraces embellished with attractive, colourful pots overflowing with verbena, salvia and other cheerful flowers, to the outer reaches of the grounds. It is truly a garden full of interest where, round every corner, there is a delightful surprise.

There is a wooded area which in spring is carpeted with vibrant Bluebells and a newly planted wild flower meadow attracts Butterflies and other wildlife species. Formal gardens, enclosed by yew and holly hedges, include a herb garden and a Mediterranean bank. The well manicured lawns are interspersed with lofty trees, providing shady cover on a sun-drenched after-noon. A colourful dimension is added by graceful Flamingo, cranes and other exotic birds strutting around the grounds.

A thoughtful addition to the garden introduced several years ago, is the Groom's Cottage Restaurant where mouth watering dishes are served during the afternoon.

Other delightful visits within easy driving distance of Guilsborough and Coton include; Althorp Hall, girlhood home of Diana, Princess of Wales. Cottesbrooke Hall, Lamport Hall and Kelmsmarsh Hall.
