About Sulgrave

George Washington the famous american president has his roots set firmly here amid ancient English countryside.

Americans from all over the U.S.A. add this village to their tour itinery. They converge here to visit the ancestral home of their illustrious first president, George Washington. Sulgrave Manor, was built in 1550 by Lawrence Washington, a wool merchant from whom George Washington is decended. To-day, this house is a museum and many mementoes of the president and his wife are on display - these include a piece of Martha Washingtons Wedding Gown.

The Medieval church of St. James still has the 17th-century Pew used by the Washington family and also on display is a Brass monument to Lawrence Washington and his wife Anne

Presenting a picture typical of English tranquility, the main drive into Sulgrave is lined by grass verges and trees. There is an interesting complexity of cottages and houses that have been there for hundreds of years. One has the date 1636 engraved on its Porch.

To the west of Sulgrave, there are two famous Battle-grounds. The one is close to Upper Wardington where a battle to place in 1469 and the other, close to Cropredy, dates 1644.

Sulgrave is six miles the north of Brackley and approximately the same distance from Banbury. As such it is ideally placed for exploring many of the historic sites that populate the towns and villages of this great area.
