About Alwinton

Alwinton occupies a lovely position in a hollow of the Cheviot Hills where the waters of the Alwin and the Coquet Rivers meet. There is excellent walking and fishing in the vicinity, and occasionally the Coquet riverbed has been known to yield agates, cornelians, and pebble crystals.

Upper Coquetdale is renowned for its birds. Leaving the village to explore the surrounding hills on foot it is possible to see Dippers, Common Sandpipers and Grey Wagtails, whilst flying above the heather-clad moorland there are often sightings of Ring Ouzel and Wheaters.

Looking around at the calm beauty of the place it is hard to believe these lands were constantly fought over and raided by family clans of raiders from both sides of the border. Even this tiny village did not escape, and often you will come across something to remind you of the legacy of these turbulent times.

Historically, the village is settled where old drovers roads crossed the landscape, perhaps this could be the reason for the Alwinton Border Shepherd's Show, held annually in the village each October. This is a lively event, drawing visitors from all parts of the county.

Alwinton, surrounded by wooded valley's is the perfect place to relax and unwind, idyllic for exploring rich wildlife, the Northumberland coast, the Northumberland National Park and the Borders.
