About Thropton

This pretty village straggles the banks of the sparkling River Coquet. It is a lively invigorating place, lying amidst the stunning countryside of Simonside, a 1,409 foot high peak which gives its name to a whole range of sandstone hills, seen from every corner of this sweeping county.

Thropton is situated a short distance from Rothbury and visitors to the area find the heather-clad hills of Thropton a sharp contrast to the gentle meadows of the lower reaches of Coquetdale, especially in high summer when the hills are a blaze of purple and the lower fields a carpet of glowing golden corn. It is the perfect setting for the annual village show, a lively event, drawing folk from all over who come to witness the fell race, sample the delights of the beer tent, admire the floral displays and enjoy the many demonstrations. Village shows are the very epitome of English country life, not many are held in such stunning countryside.

The village has a pleasant village pub, serving real ale, tasty snacks and on a cold winters night there is a real fire. Physic Lane is the setting for a legend which tells of a hospital belonging to the Knights Hospitallers of St.John of Jerusalem, being at the bottom of the lane during the 13th and 14th-centuries. Fact or fiction, who knows?

There are plenty of nearby places to visit, these include Alnwick Castle and Gardens, Cragside House, Brinkburn Priory and the Northumberland National Park.
