About Wooler

This quintessentially Northumbrian village with a delightful mix-match of properties set along the north-eastern edge of the Cheviots makes an attractive place from which to explore the open landscape of the Cheviot Hills and the dramatic Border country. As if to remind us of the bloody days of yester-year, a stone close to the village commemorated the Battle of Hamildon Hill, when the English led by Henry Percy where victorious over a huge army gathered by the Earl of Douglas. Those days are now long since gone and the only armies to arrive are in the form of tourists who appreciate friendly locals and a lovely rural atmosphere.

The magic of Wooler lies as much in its quaint streets lined with busy shops and inns as it does in the scenic beauty of its outstanding surroundings. The village is dwarfed by the sheer splendour of the Cheviot Hills and by 'Old Man Cheviot' himself. From here you can enjoy walking, horse-riding along quiet bridleways, cycling and for the more adventurous, there is the exhilaration of gliding. Within easy driving distance a wealth of wildlife can be explored along the magnificent Northumberland Heritage coast or you can laze on one of its many beautiful, almost white sandy beaches enjoying a silence which is only disturbed by the gentle lapping of the waves as the sea meets the shore.

Here in these high upland regions you feel immediately relaxed, at ease and although Wooler bustles with life, it has a timeless quality where you feel a world away from civilisation. Other close-by attractions include the beautiful Farne Islands, Bamburgh Castle, the quaint fishing village of Seahouses, Lindisfarne Holy Island and the lovely harbour at Craster.
