Burford Parish Church is one the most beautiful and interesting churches in England. The building of the present church began in the late 1100's, but it is highly probable that an earlier church existed in Saxon times. As with many old churches, Burford church was built in the shape known as 'Cruciform', the shape of a cross as a reminder of the way in which Jesus died. It was by about 1250AD that Burford church had taken this shape.
With the growth of the town of Burford due to it's increase in local trade, particularly the wool trade, many locals were able to donate more and more money to the church, and the next 200 years saw various extentions and alterations to it making it one of the largest churches in Oxfordshire. The church was finally completed in the late 1400's. In the 1800's the interior was re-organised, and in the late 1800's the church went through an extensive restoration.
