About Wroxton

Quintessential pretty Oxfordshire village showing a wealth of attractive thatched cottages, built mostly following a fire which struck the village during the latter half of the 17th-century. As with many English villages, here much use has been made of local building materials and many of the properties are constructed from marlstone, quarried nearby at Hornton.

The local squire, Sanderson Miller, was a keen amateur architect who was instrumental in pioneering the popular mid-18th-century Gothic Revival style. It is thought that he helped to lay out the park at Wroxton Abbey, where he is believed to be responsible for a lake, cascade, a temple, a number of follies and a dovecot. Work to the Abbey chapel and the tower of the parish church was carried out by Sanderson Miller at the behest of Lord North in 1748. The Abbey gardens are exceptionally pretty, they offer a wealth of scenic interest, are within easy driving distance of Banbury and make a fascinating day out for all the family.

Interestingly, Lord North was British Prime Minister at the time of American Independence and his tomb is in Wroxton's 13th-century church dedicated to All Saints.

It is not just the gardens of Wroxton Abbey that are attractive, as you stroll around this very pleasant village you will be enchanted at the lovely flowers and plants fronting almost each and every property. The village has a couple of good pubs, one of which is named for Lord North.
