About Georgian House, Bristol

Centuries ago the great docks of Bristol drew many wealthy merchants to the town, fortunes were founded by these early entreponours who dealt in everything from rich silks to sugar and it is they who built many of Bristol's splendid properties.

John Pinney was a Sugar merchant with lands and in the West Indies, he was also the owner of several slaves. Pero's Bridge at Bristol's harbourside commemorates the life of Pero who for many years was his constant slave and attendant.

The elegant Georgian House lived in by the Pinney family was designed for John Pinney by Robert Adam in around 1796. It is a house of exquisite proportions which illustrates perfectly the strict traditions of "upstairs and downstairs" leaving the visitor with very little illusion of the difference in the lives of master and servant.

In the Basement visitors can see a rare Georgian bathing pool, other rooms on display include the Kitchen and Laundry, Dining Room, Drawing Room, Breakfast Room and the Housekeepers Room.

The Georgian House is furnished in the style of the period, for its associations with slavery and stunning Adam design it is well worth seeing.
