About Frome

Close to Frome (pronounced Froom) is the great Elizabethan mansion, Longleat House, seat of the Marquess of Bath. This magnificent house is a treasure-trove of fine furniture, paintings and other works of art. The grounds to Longleat were landscaped by Capability Brown and the estate includes a well respected Safari Park that has the prestige of being the first of it's kind in Europe.

Frome itself is a busy market town that owes much of its prosperity to the main manufacturing industries of carpets and cloth. It has narrow streets and walkways and Cheap Street has a watercourse running down the middle of the road.

Dating from 1726 are the Blue House Almshouses, these ancient buildings are clustered close to a bridge that spans the River Frome. There are many other fine examples of old cottages and houses spread throughout the town, all dating from around the 18th century.

The local church is quite beautiful and well worth a visit. It is richly decorated and, unusually, it contains numerous chapels.

Scenery around Frome is soft and gentle, the countryside is littered with farms and pastureland. Should you decide to seek refreshment you will find a good selection of inns both in the town and the surrounding countryside.
