About Stanton Drew

The attractive village of Stanton Drew is found in the midst of the glorious Mendip Hills.

This lovely rural area is famous for its great pre-historic stone circle, arguably the third largest in the country following those of Stonehenge and Avebury. The circle stones are impressive, they number around 27, but it is thought at one time there may have been around thirty stones. There are further smaller rings and two standing stones at the site. A recumbent stone, known as Hauteville's Quoit lies across the River Chew. The stones are believed to be Neolithic monuments, and the site was quite possibly used for funerary rituals.

Seen in swirling Mendip mist or on a night ill-lit by moonlight the stones present an evocative eyrie sight of the drama's that took place at the time of early man and one can easily believe some of the legends surrounding both the site and village.

Of interest to visitors is the quaint Toll House with its arched windows and picturesque thatched roof.
