About Cranleigh

Cranleigh is famous for a number of reasons including the fact that in 1859 this was the first place in England to open a cottage hospital.

Cranleigh sits surrounded by beautiful open countryside, parts of which are designated as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a busy, prosperous village which offers every possible amenity for visitors together with the attractions of a Medieval church, Arts Centre, Leisure Centre, Cinema and a good choice of hotels, inns and pleasant homes offering comfortable bed and breakfast.

A nearby reservoir gives the opportunity for lakeside pursuits, and there is the chance to experience Llama Trekking in the Surrey hills. An interesting Obelisk in the town records the distances to Windsor and Brighton - maybe this indicates the Prince Regent passed through en-route for the Royal palaces.

The church is perhaps one of Cranleigh's most interesting features, in the south transept carved on an arch visitors can see the head of a grinning cat, this is believed to have been the inspiration for Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat. The church also possesses a memorial to Richard Mower, who discovered the value of lime for agriculture.

Cranleigh lies between Guildford and Horsham, both these town's offer museums which record the history of the county, its towns and villages.
