Waverley Abbey

Waverley Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery in the British Isles. It was founded in 1128 by William Gaffard, Bishop of Winchester, and by monks who came from Normandy. Many of the existing ruins date from the 13th Century and were built using the local Bargate stone. Waverley Abbey lies on the banks of the River Wey between Farnham and Godalming in Surrey. The site is now managed by English Heritage and is open to the public. View other paintings by Stanley Port at www.s-port.com
