About Alcester

Alcester developed as a market town in Roman times. It grew out of a settlement at the meeting point of two roads and two rivers, the Arrow and the Alne.

Today, the town, surrounded by luxuriant rolling countryside with thatched cottages and old farmhouses, offers visitors a pleasant experience browsing along a High Street full of antiquity, with black and white timber-frame Tudor houses standing alongside handsome Georgian red brick. Alcester's picturesque town hall was built in 1618 and its church, dedicated to St.Nicholas is from the 14th century, both are well worth a visit.

The Heritage Centre fully explores Alcester's Roman history and visitors can see exhibitions depicting everyday life in and around Roman Alcester.

A short distance from the town two of Warwickshire's premier stately homes can be found - Ragley Hall and Coughton Court, both share a fascinating history, and are set in beautiful landscaped grounds, parkland and woodland. Another delightful Alcester attraction is Kinwarton Dovecote, a charming circular building dating from the 14th century which still houses doves.

Alcester lies at the heart of several pleasurable villages all within easy reach, these include; Arrow, Aston Cantlow, Bidford, Binton and Coughton.
