At the heart of busy Stratford-upon-Avon lies one of the most visited places in Europe; the magnificent half-timbered building of the early 16th-century where William Shakespeare was born in the year 1564.
In his lifetime, the property was two separate buildings, one half formed the family home, the other an adjoining warehouse used by his father who was a successful glover, wool merchant, and a respected Alderman of the town.
The house remained the property of William Shakespeare's descendents until the 19th-century, after-which it gained a short-term chequered history. It was only after the property had been purchased in 1847 by the Shakespeare Birthday Committee that plans were put in place to restore the house to its former glory, and today replenished to look much as it would have been during Shakespeare's lifetime, the house in Henley Street makes a fitting memorial to the man who is undoubtedly England's greatest playwright.
The approach to the house is via Stratford-upon-Avon's busiest streets, visitors first enter the Visitors Centre which presents a dazzling exhibition about Shakespeare's life. From here you proceed through a beautifully scented garden, full of plants and flowers mentioned in the great man's works - the garden gives access to the Birthplace.
This is just one of the many buildings in Stratford-upon-Avon associated with William Shakespeare, but as his birthplace it is perhaps the most important.
