About Dunchurch

Dunchurch is located south of Rugby and just a short distance from the pleasures of the Oxford Canal. It was once famous as a stopping point for the coach travellers of the 18th century, but is even more famous as the Gun Powder Plot Village, for it was here, at the Old Red Lion Inn, the conspirators of the plot met on 5th November, 1605 to await news of Guy Fawkes success. Today, the Old Red Lion still exists, but it is transformed into a charming private residence known as Guy Fawkes House.

The M45 By-Pass built in the latter half of the 20th century brought blessed relief to the village, saving it from the ravages of today's modern traffic. Thus it remains a delightful place to visit with lingering memories of yester-year. These include a charming village green, village stocks and maypole, and many timeless buildings, particularly black and white timber-frame with thatched roofs, together with other houses and cottages of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Dunchurch is associated with many famous people, William Webb Ellis who invented Rugby Football is known to have visited, also Winston Churchill, the Duke of Wellington and Princess Victoria before becoming Queen. Dick Turpin of Highway fame lived in Dunchurch for several years, and the poet Longfellow is believed to have penned his Smithy poem whilst staying at the Dun Cow.

Today's visitors to Dunchurch come for its history, its lovely rural atmosphere and for its close proximity to lovely Draycote Water Park, a place of natural beauty and calm that attracts visitors from all over the Midlands.

There is much for visitors to see and do in Dunchurch. The area has a wealth of pleasant places to stay, or if you are simply enjoying a great day out, why not visit one of the several atmospheric country inns. Notable amongst these is The Dun Cow, The Old Thatched Cottage, The Green Man, Adele's and The Huntsman Carvery.

Dunchurch lies a few miles from the Northamptonshire border where you will find Althorp Park - the childhood home of the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
