About Rugby

This town is the home of Rugby public school, the place where William Webb Ellis carried the ball instead of kicking it, and thus, in 1823 the game of Rugby football was born, it is a game that has been played with relish ever since, most recently bringing glory to the English Rugby football side. A plaque on a wall beside Rugby school celebrates the exploits of William Webb Ellis.

Rugby is a pleasant town, it has narrow streets, open squares and a market. The town centre offers a mixture of modern and historic with the newer buildings of the library and town hall sitting comfortably amongst streets with modern shop fronts beneath upper storey's revealing buildings from the Victorian and Edwardian periods. Of interest is Elborow's Almshouses, Rugby School Close, the town's churches, the Rupert Brooke statue and the clock tower in the market place. There are fine Victorian houses in tree lined Regent Place, pleasant parks and some nice inns.

The town is ringed by lovely old villages, and is crossed by a meandering canal once used for the shipment of coal and other commodities, but now mainly used for pleasure boating. This offers visitors walks along pleasing tow paths, where it is pleasant to view gaily painted river traffic and enjoy canal wildlife.

The town is well worth seeing, it is ideal for a weekend or for a longer stay to explore the many hidden treasures of Warwickshire.
