a Castle in the town of Dudley, in the county of West Midlands

About Dudley Castle

Dudley possesses one of the most important ruins in the West Midlands, the panorama from the keep of this fortress which was once considered as a place of imprisonment for Mary, Queen of Scots, is quite magnificent, extending over seven counties.

A castle was recorded in Dudley at the time of the Doomsday Book, but this is believed to have probably been a wooden structure erected at an earlier date. Most of the attractive ruins we see today date from the 12th and 13th centuries, it served as a fortress until after the English Civil War, and after-wards was left to the ravages of time and a fire of 1750.

Much of the castle site is occupied by Dudley Zoo, which has over 1,000 animals all living amongst the splendour of the ruins in conditions as close to their natural habitation as is possible. Amongst the rare and beautiful creatures at the zoo, are endangered species ranging from lions to penguins. There is fun here for all the family, loads of attractions for children including face-painting, and most latterly the castle has been the scene of the biggest ever ghost hunt of any castle ruin in the country.

Not only is the zoo a great family attraction, but the castle is of historic merit in its own right, and for anyone remotely interested in romantic castle ruins, Dudley Castle makes a fascinating day out.
