About Fishbourne

Fishbourne welcomes visitors with an attractive roadside village sign. From then on its pleasant rural charm become obvious, particularly around the area of the village pond, this was created for the Millennium celebrations and is now colonised by ducks and moorhens. It has a large dipping platform and around the waters edges there are clumps of wild flowers.

This is a large village, it is a combination of Old Fishbourne and New Fishbourne. The discovery of the Roman Villa here confirms that this was a settlement during Roman times, if not before.

Much of village life centres around the beautiful parish church which has served the community for over 700 years. This stands, surrounded by a large lawned churchyard with graves and tombs from past centuries. The church, dedicated to St.Peter and St.Mary, occupies a tranquil location over looking the pleasant water meadows bordering Fishbourne Creek.

The village has a thriving community, it has a range of small shops, a couple of pubs, and for visitors wishing to tarry to explore the undulating Sussex landscape, there are plenty of bed and breakfast establishments both in and around the village.

Fishbourne Club and Playing Fields extend a warm welcome to anyone staying in the village. It's facilities include, Tennis, Football, Cricket, Bowles, and Croquet.

Fishbourne Roman Villa was discovered during excavations of 1960 when a water pipe was receiving attention. Its discovery put this tranquil village firmly on the tourist trail, for the villa offers an exciting glimpse into the wonders of ancient civilisation and how life was lived in both a military base of the Roman Empire and a luxurious Roman Palace. It also has a modern treasure, The Fishbourne Map, beautifully sewn by the women of Fishbourne Women's Institute - the map, in stark contrast to the Roman splendour depicts the village as it is today! During the summer season lots of events take place at the site, these include events "themed" around Roman Soldiers and Baroque Concerts.

In its lovely location close to the town of Chichester, Fishbourne makes an idyllic location for a pleasant weekend away for all the family. It is close to historic Chichester harbour with its colourful yachts and strong maritime history, yet has access to a hinterland of spacious countryside. It is a place with something for everyone, little creeks, wildlife, and the beautiful beaches of the Sussex Heritage Coast are all within easy reach.
