About Norland

Once part of West Riding of Yorkshire, Norland is a scattered village that dates back to the 13th century, where the timber-framed farmhouses sat on the slopes above the river Calder and Ryburn. In the 17th century these buildings were replaced with stone houses for the workers of the wool industry that was thriving at the time.

Some yeoman farmers were able to afford substantial houses such as Lower Old Hall (1634) and Fallingworth Hall (1642).
Norland Hall was an old timber-framed building, later encased in stone. However it was struck by lightning in 1911 and eventually dismantled by 1914, the year of the Great War. An American newspaper magnate bought the stone from the hall with the intention of re-building it in the USA. However the hall was never built again and the stone was used in a chapel in San Simeon, California, in 1968.

Today Norland is mainly populated by those who commute out of the village to work. There is one public house "The Moorcock" and Norland is also home to one of the smallest Working Men's Club's in the country.
The village church is St Luke's and was opened in 1866, with the primary school was built in 1871 as a Sunday school. The village war memorial was erected in 1920.
