About Hannington

The village of Hannington occupies a lovely landscape in the deep countryside between Highworth and the village of Castle Eaton on the Thames Path.

It is a picturesque pleasant place, ringed by farmlands with fields full of ripened corn, hedgerows with scampering rabbits and meadows sweeping down to the river, grazed by lazy cattle and sheep. Strolling along its leafy lanes hardly anything disturbs the sweet sound of silence other than singing birds. Occasionally you might chance upon a shy deer or spot pheasants playfully darting in and out of hedges.

The village has several mellow buildings, its ancient church stands surrounded by fields, its churchyard littered with tombs and gravestones from several centuries. The interior of St. John the Baptist is very calm and spiritual, it is a lovely place of worship that is well worth visiting.

Flowing close to the village, the River Thames offers a lot of interest for visitors, with its busy natural river life, swans, ducks and the odd heron or two. At Hannington the river is crossed by an old three arched bridge.

Another attractive sight is the warmly welcoming Jolly Tar pub. The building has an interesting history, it was originally a farmhouse, but became a pub in 1855, hence it is an historic building which retains many of its original features.

Hannington benefits from being in beautiful countryside, it has the attributes of the rivers Thames and Cole. The Thames Pathway passes closeby, and for those who enjoy visiting historic places there are the National Trust properties Buscot Park and Great Barn nearby, as well as the hillfort at Bradbury Hill.
