About Welland

With the Malvern Hills forming a dramatic back-cloth this is rural Worcestershire at its very best. Welland is a quiet village where the old blends harmoniously with the new. As you drive around tree-clad lanes you notice old farmhouses with ancient barns, sympathetically converted to provide handsome modern family dwellings.

A short distance away, almost cradled in the arm of the hills, lies Little Malvern Priory, built as part of a Benedictine Monastery in 1171. It now forms part of Little Malvern Court. The core of the court is the 14th-century Priors Hall with additions from the Victorian era. It is a handsome building in a lovely tranquil setting. The grounds, which are a riot of year round colour include formal gardens, terraces and a lake. Interestingly, this small estate has remained with the same family since the time of the Dissolution. On show are paintings, tapestries and a collection of fine furniture. Little Malvern Court is open to public view and guided tours can be arranged.

The land around Welland is mostly agricultural, with the main road running down from the Malvern Hills through to Upton-on-Severn bounded on one side by the Three Counties Showground. Along here you can find two watering holes, the Marlank and the Pheasant. Both offer a pleasing atmosphere, hearty food and good ale. Just off the Upton Road, is the atmospheric Anchor Inn which has a pleasant garden in which to sit and enjoy fine views of the Malvern Hills.
