Winder at the Magpie Mine,Peak District National Park

The mine is first recorded in 1795, though the site may be much older. At the end of the Second World War a new winder and steel headgear was installed,it's really a ships winch fitted with a diesel engine. Even with this more sophisticated equipment no more large areas of ore were mined, the mine closed in 1954 (information taken from Derbyshire Heritage)
