What looks like a marble base is actually a thin layer of water causing the reflection. For me, this is one of the most pleasing shots I have ever taken.

A very nice shot. It is a shame you didn't wait for the people to move away they are a slight distraction. I admit though that I am anti people in shots unless they are an essential element . I'm also anti white vans and red cars. Nevertheless this is a well captured image.

I agree that people can be a distraction in architectural shots, particularly if they happen to be slap-bang in the middle of the frame as they are here. In the early days of photography, with tripod-mounted plate cameras, people often seemed to be absent from such shots simply because the exposure times were so long. A similar effect can be achieved these days with a tripod-mounted digital camera and an ND filter. Unfortunately, many cathedrals and similar ancient buildings do not allow tripods to be used, though sometimes it is possible to make use of a convenient object to keep the camera steady.

Thank you for your helpful comments. The Cathedral was very busy and I would have needed to wait forever to get a picture void of people. Personally, I like the moment captured as realistically as possible and for me the inclusion of the people helps to seal the moment as people mill around the sacred space. I took this hand held and did not have the luxury of a tripod. Still pleased with the result. Hope the picture brought you some pleasure. Take care. Graham
