St. Mary's Church, Ewelme

Tomb of Alice de la Pole in St. Mary's Church, Ewelme. The tomb is unusual in having a lower section in which can be seen an effigy of the cadaver of the deceased. Alice de la Pole (1404 - 1475) was a grand-daughter of Geoffrey Chaucer, author of the Canterbury Tales. Her alternative title is Princess Alice Duchess of Suffolk. She was lady-in-waiting to Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England by marriage to King Henry VI.

Thanks for your kind comment, Chris & Sarah. The angle was dictated by the limited access around the tomb, not by artistic inspiration ! There are very few examples of Cadaver Tombs like this in England, the only others which come to mind are the one of Richard Fleming, Bishop of Lincoln, and that of Henry Chichele, Archbishop of Canterbury, although I'm sure there must be others.
