About Peter Mark Roget

Physician, author

He was born the son of a Huguenot Minister, and became a physician to the Manchester

Infirmary in 1804; physician to the Northern Dispensary, London in 1808, he was made F.R.S. in 1815, and became Secretary to the Royal Society from 1827 to 1849. He was Fullerian Professor of Physiology at the Royal Institution 1833-1836, and an original member of the senate of London University. He wrote On Animal and Vegetable Physiology (Bridgewater Treatise 1834) and his Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases (1852) reached a 28th edition during his lifetime, and is still being published in the 21st century. He started collecting the indexes of words for it in 1805. He died at West Malvern, Worcestershire
