Would anyone know how I might get info on a Sgt. in the Army Medical Corp.  I am researching my family history and have been looking for info on a James Begley abt. 1839 born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.  The 1861 English census confirms that he was a Sgt. in the Army Hospital Corps., other info is Frimley ED??, institution, or vessel:  Medical Department Lee and Aldershot Camp.  I'm told that the Aldershot base was a Army base in Surrey, England.  Any info or suggestions on how I might narrow down my search would be helpful.  James Begley is the last remaining brother of my Great-Grandfather that I need to find and he has been very difficult to find info on, don't know if he got married, died young, moved to Canada with the others.  He might have even stayed in England or moved by to Scotland so you see there are so many things that could have happened now to narrow it down and found out what happen to our Mystery man James Begley.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you

In 1871, he's in Portsmouth Harbour as a storeman, on board a ship called Asia. Still unmarried. His UK records after that seem to dry up. Aldershot today is still a very large army base. His army records will likely be in our National Archives.

Thank you Paul for your help, the James Begley in your 2nd post I'm sure isn't him his father was James and mother Isabella.  Thats part of the problem trying to find him since James Begley appears to be a very common name like John Smith.  I have however wondered if the family you posted is connected some how since their names keep coming up.  Since the name is so common it also makes it difficult to search in Canada there are just so many that could be him here as well.

I will have to check out that ship Asia and see what comes up and prehaps contact the Archives in the UK and see if I can purchase a copy of his record.

Oh by the way, cute profile picture :)

Hi Donna---my best bet quickly scanning through things-----Grandad James Begley ( b.1781 ) had son John ( 1810-1855 ) who married Isabella McArthur ( 1810-1869); James's parents.  The ship James is on is HMS Asia which in former years had been the flagship of Admiral Sir Edward Codrington at the Battle of Navarino Bay; 1827. He'd formerly been the Capt. of HMS Orion at the Battle of Trafalgar.  In the 1850s, HMS Asia was switched to guardship duties, and on the 1871 Census moored in Portsmouth, there are serveral army medical corps staff on board, of which one was your James.

He seems to later disappear from the UK, but there was a James Begley b. 1839 that sailed to Quebec and in 1891  was living in Hamilton City, Ontario. Is this him, now in Canada?

WOW Paul your good, we do have several Begleys in our line that lived in Hamilton so I'll check them out again and see if I can't find him. I did find a James Begley a long time ago that ended up living in Quebec and it wasn't him.  It wouldn't surprise me if he moved to Hamilton.  Thanks for the info, very much appreciated.

You're welcome Donna , though I suspect you have located pretty much every Begley family member in Hamilton and Toronto; But checking Quebec arrivals passenger lists from 1871 to 91 for this James b.1839 might give a lead. I'll keep checking here if still in England, but do have my suspicions he's gone to Canada with other family there.

It was called the Army Hospital Corps James was in, and their museum is here--

First class response Paul, above an beyond the call of duty!

Michael, I have deleted your response because I didn't think it was entirely appropriate in this particular case. Sometimes people can be offended, even though I believe you perhaps didn't intend it to be that way. I think it could have easily been 'offputting' for Donna, who after all is said and done, was only asking the members for a little help.

Regards Ron
