Hi; Jim Schell here;  I'd like too know if there's anyone who from nearby "Leeds".  I don't have much information too go by.  Samuel Senior was my Great Grandfather.  He was born near Leeds on December 16, 1860.  I don't know off hand when he immigrated to the U.S.  He died on May 14, 1927 in Council Bluffs, Iowa.  It's unknown if Samuel had a middle name.  I would appreciate any help given.

Hi Jim---US Federal Census's seem to indicate he arrived in the US in 1884 ( other census years state 1885). No middle name listed. There are several Samuel Seniors born around that time in the Yorkshire regions, and aren't sure which is the correct one for your grand dad. Know his parent's names by any chance?

Only found 2 Samuel Senior births in the right time period: one registered Dec 1860 in Huddersfield and the other in Mar 1861 in Bradford!

Thanks for the quick response.  Don't have a clue as too Samuel's parents names.  Have some other name requests that my lead too some questions on Samuel though.   Samuel's in-laws names were James J. Rainbow Sr. and Eliza (Goody) Rainbow. James J, Sr.was born on March 16, 1826 & Eliza (Goody) was born in 1831 and were married in "Suffolkshire" on 1854.  The Rainbows  came from near York.  James came too the U.S. at the age of 24yrs.  James J. Rainbow's parents names were Jonah & Sarah Rainbow.  If you or anyone else can fill in the blanks it will be greatly appreciated.

I'd say he immigrated in 1884, for on the 1900 US Census, he gives his marriage date to Lizzie (sic) as 1885. She born in Iowa of English parents, as above.

They both listed their date of the birth the same as December 1861 which  I think in Samuel's case, is misleading and should have put Dec. 1860.

Paul;  You seem to have a very good nack on finding long lost information.  Can you by chance scour through some "Huddersfield" records too see if Sam Senior had siblings?  Or perhaps other Seniors still living in the Huddersfield area.  My folks visited London in 1970 and at that time my father tried too locate some information but wasn't too successful.  Samuel Senior comes from my Paternal side of the family. He was my fathers grandfather on his dad's side.  Our last name changed after the death of my grandfather (Harry Downes Senior) Samuel's son.   My father was just 7yrs. old.  My Grandmother remarried and her second husband adopted my dad.

At the moment, the most likely candidate is the Sam Senior born in Batley ( Huddersfield). But, the family moved to Heckmondwike, and worked in a woollen mill, and at age 12, Sam was working there too.

So, this would give dad George (1828) and mum Mary ( 1832) with siblings Charotte, Joe, John, Charles, George, and Aguilla. His grandma Rachael ( 1795 ) is living with them in 1871.

I'd like to find more confirmation we have the right Sam Senior here, though his birth date is correct, and doesn't appear to be any likely alternatives.

Paul:  I was a bit suprised on the population size of "Heckmondwike" with regards too the neighboring community of Huddersfield.  Granted these figures are recent and not 100 years old. I viewed some history and a few available of "Heckmondwike" too better familirize myself better with this community. Is there any birth records available on Samuels siblings as too where and when the were born?  Thanks again for being so quick with your responses.
