I think it all boils down to money---The government hasn't figured out yet how to fob the cost of replacing them all onto the local councils. Thousands of speed cameras would be immediately illegal now measuring an illegal distance/speed until they were converted, thus robbing the government of a valuable source of income for some time. They would also run the risk of being prosecuted if any camera was found still in use that hadn't been converted, so the government would end up taking themselves to court. . It would take an army of roadside verge investigators looking for milestone markers in the undergrowth a council hasn't touched for years, so they could have a conversion chart applied to them. The enormous cost of moving every motorway junction closer to a revised metricated sign informing you of it doesn't bare thinking about. |

A bit like the charm of Southern Comfort after they'd devised a new use for peaches in Georgia. Their renown southern hospitality comes in many flavours. How many English accents? I'd say hundreds. |

For a simple example, American's use the word "candy" for our "sweets", though candy has it's origins in Persia from "qand" meaning sugar, it's main ingredient, and came to England as candy in the early 1400s, but when we stopped using it, Americans continued with it, as today. When you asked how many accents here. I think you also meant to include that as dialects too, and in the US, it is almost certainly more of than what we have here due to the vast number of nationalities of immigrants over the centuries moving there. |
