I just don't understand why anybody should get upset over what is essentially a generally well known nickname, whatever the name, whatever the abbreviation, acronym or otherwise. There really is a lot worse to have to worry about in this world. |

I had no idea, and I doubt that generally us 'Brits' do either. And that comes from somebody who has a great deal of respect for America and/or Americans. Having said that, like most places on this earth there are always a few bad apples in every bushel. |

His Commanding Officer is now holding an enquiry into it, and various political leaders are stating their disapproval in one way or another, condemming what can be heard on the video tape. Anyone born in the last 30 years will not be aware of this and may well use the word as an abbreviation for Pakistani without any sense of wrong or insult. Forgiveness is the order of the day, and awareness of others sensibilities. Incidentally, in the forces soldiers are 'Pongos' (Wherever the army goes the pong goes), the Navy are Fishheads, and the RAF are Penguins (All flap & no fly). When your life is on the line nick names and humour both become hard and sometimes cruel, you can't blame the young men and women who do this difficult and dangerous job. |
