My dad was a consummate gardener, Cathy. I wish I'd taken the time to learn something from him.

Of course, growing anything here in the desert is allot different than growing in England.

My granddad was too. 

Same goes - trying to grow nice veg here is also totally different and difficult - they can't take the heat and I suppose that would definitely apply to where you are.

My dad also loved gardening. When I was growing up he turned our whole back yard into a garden. Mom used to can everything. One year over 700 quarts of food. My grandfather always wanted to be a farmer but his mother wouldn't let him. She was a very controlling miserable woman.

I really miss the berries we had so many of in England. 

Apples and pears also won't grown where we are. 

But peaches and avocados and citrus grow well.

I do!!   nice medium soft peaches ...and you can't beat a nice juicy pear either to go with the peaches!!      I like most fruit!!Wink
