I read in the papers that the old Victorian Pier in Hastings is destroyed by fire. Another British landmark gone. Sad very sad. Locals recently started to raise funds to restore the old pier, but I afraid that it is forever lost. We visited this pier in 2008. You could only enter a small part, the rest was unstable, but it was filled with history.

I love this kind of Victorian sea resort buildings but more and more they are disappearing; the piers, the pools the amusement halls.

Luckily we can find some photo’s of the old pier here on POE. If members have more pictures please post them.

That is a shame.  Does anyone know if there are any left?? And are they taking steps to prevent them burning down - which seems to be the fate of so many of the old piers

Police have arrested two young men (18 and 19) on suspicion of arson. They were caught jumping from the pier as the blaze took hold.

It is so sad that some people have nothing in their lives other than to destroy things for others to enjoy. It is such a sad loss. Frown

It is sad to here about Hastings Pier.  I agree with CathyE, it's sad that some people just do not care about destroying property, buildings, things.  And it is a terrible thought that another landmark will be gone forever...except in pictures and/or memories.

Luckily, there are still a few Piers round our coast. Southend Pier is being rebuilt at the moment. The end of the Pier was damaged and is almost completed.
