Just signed onto this site as I'm interested in tracing back the past of some of my ancesters that came from Barrow in Furness England and wondered if there are still decendants living there. My grandmother came from there as a war bride after the 1st world war. Her name was Elsie Corless and she married my grandfather Benjamin E. James. If anyone has any info on tis I would be pleased to hear from you.

Hi Darrell, a very warm welcome to the POE site.

I have found the birth of an Elsie May Corless in the Sept quarter 1894 in Barrow in Furness, Lancashire

I think this is her in 1901 at 22 Paradise Street, Barrow in Furness: Father Henry Corless born 1860 Lancaster, Lancashire, Inn keeper and mother Lizzie A Corless born 1865 Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, together with 5 other siblings and a servant.

Henry Corless married Lizzie Adelaide Brough in the March quarter (that means Jan/Feb/March) 1886 in Barrow in Furness.

This could be her in 1911 at Sowerby Lodge Farm, Barrow in Furness, she is a servant to the farmer and his family.

The only E M Corless I could find taking passage to Canada is listed as Mrs E M Corless leaving Liverpool on the 10 Oct 1919 on the Scandinavian bound for Montreal Canada.

I could probably go further back for you in England and I am sure that Paul will spring into action here with the Canadian information.

Do you know if Elsie Corless was her maiden name or did she marry a Corless before going to Canada?

There is a possible marriage in Ashton Under Lyne of an Edward Corless marrying an Elsie Hibbert in March quarter 1918

You were right Cathy with the Elsie May Corless of 1894 and her family.

She married Benjamin E James (mechanic) 24 March 1919 in Toronto, Ont.  He was b. 1895 Ontario, son of James James and Charlotte Henderson.

The similar named lady in Oct 1919 you found was on her way to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba.

One past away at birth but then there was my uncle Gordon James and then my dad Harvey James (Both of which are deceased now). So do any of you know if there are any desendents of the Corlesses still living in Barrow in Furness???   My mom will be so pleased to see what info you have all passed along to me as she is trying to do a family tree. I look forward to hearing from you all again.

Thanks again from your new friend in Canada.
