A jumper in England is what Americans call sweaters. Your jumpers are called bib dresses in England or just dresses (bib style).

What do Americans then call clothing named after James Brudenell; 7th Earl of Cardigan?   He was just as famously known for leading the Charge Of The Light Brigade in 1854.

I think they lump them under sweaters Paul. But we'll wait to hear from a real American as I have been known to be wrong (though not often  )

You're right, Sue.  There are 2 kinds of sweaters, pullovers and cardigans.  Cardigans are the button downs, pullovers well, obviously, are the ones you pull over your head.  Kind of like the fisherman sweaters from the W. coast of Ireland, Paul.

I thought dresses were called frocks in England, Sue?  And I guess I was thinking bib overalls when I took a wrong guess at what a jumper was.

Bib overalls are called dungarees in England. We stole that one from India I believe.
