Have only just seen this thread, and can tell you that Mt. Isa would have to be the old-sole of the continent. Way outback from anywhere.

SYDNEY (AFP) — Scores of angry women have protested against the mayor of their outback Australian town after he said fat and unattractive females often found love and happiness in the remote mining community.

Up to 200 people rallied against Mount Isa mayor John Molony late Tuesday, with many demanding his resignation over his call for "beauty-disadvantaged" women to move there to make the most of a gender imbalance.

Molony won the wrath of many over the weekend when he suggested that "if there are five blokes to every girl, we should find out where there are beauty-disadvantaged women and ask them to proceed to Mount Isa."

He said he often saw unattractive women in Mount Isa who looked like they were enjoying life in the northwestern Queensland town.

"Quite often you will see walking down the street a lass who is not so attractive with a wide smile on her face," he said.

"Whether it is recollection of something previous or anticipation for the next evening, there is a degree of happiness."

He later told national radio that obese women could even lose weight under the gaze of Mount Isa males.

"There's a great incentive because there's that much attention focused on them and they become interested in looking better -- and in no time they just shed it," he said.

Mount Isa woman Rikki Loccisano, who attended Tuesday's protest, said the comments were offensive.

"It paints the women here as second rate and suggests that the men will settle for anything. He has put everyone down," she said.

Molony was unmoved by the protest, which he did not attend because "no one would listen to me."

"I think the women who turned up at that protest rally tonight are beauty disadvantaged themselves and they can't get over it so they attack me," he told Mount Isa's North West Star.

He said while some people were offended by his comments, they were intended as a compliment.

A woman could come to Mount Isa and transform herself "with love and devotion in marriage from an ugly ducking to a beautiful swan," he said.

Thanks for posting the full story Wolf; it's even more outrageous in it's full form! LOL.  We only had a tiny excerpt in the paper here.

No joke; this was the headline of a small article in today's paper.

Apparently, the Mayor of a remote Australian town has come under fire for inviting ugly women to move there - saying the shortage of females means they have a chance of finding love at last.  According to the article, the ratio of five men to every woman in Mount Isa, Queensland, meant that "beauty disadvantaged" women would be welcome.

Aside from the obvious insult to both men and women, I think this is hilarious! Laughing Well, unless I get a personal invitation in the mail...then it wouldn't be so funny. LOL!

this reminds me of my dog episode, I had an part poodle part terrier, and the neighbor down the street had an poodle breeding business and she'd let the "sire" out every morning in the area, and we had no fences at that time. Well, we were in the process of building ours. So went around front and had our dog tied to an line out back, and guess what, they mated. so when the puppies were born, one still born and two others I looked at small back puppies with tannish eyebrows. I thought, what had gotten to my dog!!! They were ugly little things. I was sure we were doomed or something. Well, I was told to give them some time. We named the little male "buffy" and the little female "midgy" and kept them both. In time they became the most beautiful "silver-hair" poodles you'd ever seen. But not before I gave Midgy to my dad, with one ear sticking up and the other down. If she didn't look "strange" and everyone kind of laughed looking at her, about the size of an handful...but even in time that went away..so never under estimate what can become something beautiful...someone took about 20 just normal "house-wives" and dressed them up, had the hair fixed and well groomed then an took an snapshot of the whole group, just as nice looking as any Hollywood starlet pictures...in gowns rather then bathing suits. So it goes to show you what can be done...and what "life" is all about...rather looking dead drop gorgeous is natual or not. Beauty is nothing without an fine mind to go with it also.
