Lawson Posts: 2310 Joined: 17th Jul 2008 Location: USA | quotePosted at 04:34 on 10th October 2008 Think I should tell her now, since I worked retail for 5 years...maybe they don't do this over there, but over here,....and it was an well known long time establishment, still operating today...they buy the stuff at wholesale, immediately double the price and add 20 per cent for when they put the item on sale...so if it gets to clearance at 70 per cent off, your getting it for what they paid for it at wholesale...in which case they perfer to give it brand new to the thrift stores....for one reason, an full price tax deduction..most likely why all these years they are still in business....when everyone else isn't. The newest thing over here is store top "hotels", Macy's just did that an opened up recently downtown Portland. Good timing with the high gasoline prices. I think it was you could fly into Portland, and as long as you got an hotel room downtown, you could ride from light-rail through the core area of Portland to the airport and not pay for it while you were visting..don't know if that'sstilltru eor not though..they try different gimmicks all the time to lure people to visit. As for the thrift stores, they use to be pretty down and out places, not any more, they often sell these things with the store tags still hanging on them at $19.99 for $4.99. They just recently built an brand new thrift store here, as nice as any of the other stores in town that are somewhat newly built also. It really challenges you in bargain hunting these days. It's as much the quality these days to me as it is the price though. One reason I like to watch HGTV (Home and Garden TV) for the craft ideas. I like store window shopping though, something every one did when I was an little child.. |

But, only down the road in South Kensington are several major museums that are well worth visiting too. |
