That's right Wolf, it does mean Good day! :) It's the equivalent to good morning as well.

A quick lesson in Portuguese: bom=good (if it refers to a masculine object or subject, but you need to use 'boa' for the feminine form); 

We say 'Bom dia', because 'dia' is a masculine word; we say 'Boa tarde' (tarde=afternoon), because 'tarde' is a feminine word.
