This poem refers to US soldiers but I think you can replace that with any country of your choosing. Wishing all troops a very safe and happy Holiday season.
A SOLDIER'S CHRISTMAS 'Twas the night before Christmas, he lived all alone, I had come down the chimney with presents to give, As I looked all about, a strange sight I did see, No Stockings by mantle, just boots filled with sand, With medals and badges, awards of all kinds, For this house was different, it was dark and dreary, The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone, The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder, Was this the hero of whom I'd just read? I realized the families that I saw this night, Soon round the world, the children would play, They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year, I couldn't help wondering how many lay alone, The very thought brought a tear to my eye, The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice, I fight for freedom, I don't ask for more, The soldier rolled over and drifted to sleep, I kept watch for hours, so silent and still, I didn't want to leave, on that cold, dark night, Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure, One look at my watch, and I knew he was right, ~ Author Unknown *~

We do indeed owe a huge debt of grattitude to all those men and women who stand between us and the night . I'm a simple man and dont always understand the complexities of the different conflicts which blight our world . I do know this , that irrespective of mine or anybody else's beliefs or polotics we should honour the men and women who fight in our name . In a time when these brave souls are pushed to breaking point and starved of the basic requirements needed to do their already difficult job properly , when the care that they recieve on returning home is all too often lacking the very least we can do is acknowledge their bravery and sacrifice . To all those who rsk their lives in the defence of me and mine I offer you a heartfelt thank you . |

My 19 year old nephew is due for deployment to Iraq in January/February; I am glad he is home for this Christmas, but in my heart I do wonder if he will be here for the next. |

I took old snowflake crotched table cloths, and cut out the flakes, and resewed them along the edges. I mean I sent an box and then some. I remember when my own hubby was in Vietnam and I sent an huge huge box of decorated cookies and goodies, I heard from the guys that year also, they sent me an picture of them with big smiles muching on cookies. In this case I thought they could keep the unbreakable snowflakes in their wallet if need be for when they get back home as an rememberance. It is hard sometimes to take stuff with you if your "moving" about as an solidier. |
