Jason's right, Krissy. I saw it on one of those science channels once. When we sleep the brain will release a chemical that does cause temporary paralysis. This chemical is what prevents us from sleep walking.

When you experience the paralysis, you are between sleep and awake and therefore conscious of the paralysis. If your eyes are partially open you will even experience hallucinations which are nothing more than your dreams being experienced with open eyes and intake stimulus from the real world mixed in with your dreams.

When I was a child and well into my twenties I would suffer frequently (several times a week) from sleep paralysis between sleeping and waking, accompanied by the most vivid and terrifying hallucinations.

Wow! This is a revelation to me. I have these, not frequently any more thank goodness. I thought I was being overtaken by evil spirits or something, so this is good news. Thank you Diana.

I know what you mean, Sue. It's a horrible and frightening experience.  In fact, I remember some bozo elder from the church I was in at the time, telling my mother that I must be in to something that was attracting demons!  What a moron.
