Not me!!!

Ok, so now that Spring is offically here I want to start planning what I will plant this season!! I have a deck so I can fit several planters but I need to know which flowers, plants and even veggies do best in planters!!!

Last spring I planted zinnias I think and they grew really tall!!!!  I would like something a bit shorter!! LOL!!!

Anyone have any tips??

My mother has two green thumbs!  She can toss any old seed or root out the window and it will come up and bloom.  Smile

Do you have more sun or shade on your deck?  Do you like primroses?

I like bulbs myself, they seem to need little to grow on also. My grandson and I just planted an container of some decorative lilies in red with the green leaves that have slits of an lighter green in the leaf, and surrounded the oustide with trailing strawberries..should grow well, it's inside for one thing, potting soil for the other thing. One of the prettiest places to go to in spring has got to be the Japanese Gardens in Portland..in one area you wind over and through an small made stream and bog, with brillian blue and purple Iris planted in profusion, and lime green moss for the ground cover, and in the stream are your large colorful koi fish...which they allow you to feed. It's got benches here and there and an small tea house to escape from instant spring showers going through. It's on-line if you'd like to take an look.. Portland, Oregon "Japanese Garden".  They have an few areas there also for symbology using white gravel rock..or larger rocks. You might get some ideas from them, they "train" the branchs to grow in an specific shape...which takes many years. They don' t use bark dust like we do here for our landscaping, they tend to use different kinds of mosses instead. some of them bloom also during the year. Make yourself an wheel barrel waterfall feature, it's fairly easy and takes up room in an nice way.. any old barrel would work also, pipe, whatever you got...You can make them these days out of about anything. Plant old rubber boots with tall yellow daffodil also. Have you tried the "eatable" nasturiums or violets  for your garden, along with squash blooms they can be deep fried in an batter, or simply added to salads. One of the easiest and hardiest and long growing plants in these parts is geraniums. They have all kinds of those also. The Susan B. Kommen society sells pink ones to help fund breast cancer research also. Have an "Plant swap meet" with others also....and pick up some different types of plants. the price has got to be right if you trade samples with each other for free.

Great ideas...thank you Shirley!! In my town we have the Doris Duke Estate and she has great gardens to tour!! I've never been there but I think I'll make a trip there this summer!!  The girls will love it too!  I have to help my mom with her garden in the next few weeks. Hers is HUGE and has a really large koi pond!! I'm looking forward to getting my hands in the soil and getting as dirty as possible!!!
