As visitors on my C S Lewis tour of Oxford look at the former home of J R R Tolkien, I ask them what the second initial 'R' stands for. In six years of operating the tour, probably less than a dozen have managed to come up with the correct name for that second initial 'R' and then it was the kids who nailed it! So c'mon members and without looking it up who know's what it stands for, and what does the name mean? Remember no cheating and no Brownie points for getting it right either......if you do that is!!!

Randolph, Raymond, Ronald, Richard, Ruben, Robin.......hmmmn, I wonder what it was?

Ha! You're asking a LOTR fan here, it's Reuel, though I don't think it's spelt right, that part I'd have to look up. His first name was Ronald.

I forgot about you Sue, a LOTR specialist, aargh!! You are of course right about it being 'Reuel' but what does Reuel mean? He named all of his children to include this name. So, part two of the question what does 'Reuel' mean?

Ha! Of course I knew his first name was John, but the old brain just isn't working.

Can I cheat now and check on my spelling, as I'm quite sure I'm not right.

As usual Paul you are on the money - well done, and Sue you did spell the name correctly.....Reuel. In Hebrew, as Paul refers (is there anything that man doesn't know?) it means 'Friend of God' and Tolkien included the name Reuel in all of his children.

There you go Krissy, all is revealed. Thanks for taking part dear friends.
