Diana, please convey my best wishes and fervent prayers to Josie that she will find gainful and meaningful employment very soon.  My daughter, Liz, was laid off in March and just started her new job this week.  She had a bunch of people praying for her too, and she was blessed with a full time position with what appears to be a secure company doing exactly the type of work she was doing before.  It was fortunate that Liz is currently living with me so she didn't have to face the pressure of rent, etc. coming due.  What sort of work does Josie do?

Maria, unfortunately when doing layoffs the employers aren't obligated to give you any notice.  We had layoffs here at my firm on several occasions, and "notice" came when they came into your office carrying empty boxes to use for packing up your personal belongings.  They do, however, usually give you a severance package to hold you over for a while until you can find another job.

Thank you all again so very much!

Barbara, Jo worked for a large auto dealership taking leads and drumming up business.  Unfortunately, she was one of the last hired and thus one of the first to be let go.  No severance package unfortunately, but hopefully they will allow her to collect unemployment. Better yet, by the grace of God she'll have another job within a couple of weeks.

I am glad that things worked out for your daughter Barbara.Smile

I was sorry to hear about your sister Diana and hopefull,y she'll be able to find suitable employment in the near future. The unemployment statitics that come from the US are frightning and never cease to amaze me.

As the President had a slogan of Change during his election campaining, what change I think there should be is returning the US to a manufacturing country after decades of letting it, in one form or another, end up going abroad. So, if the US wanrs jobs back, I'd suggest bringing back manufacturing and jobs for those to produce a variety of products for home and for export. I think it must be difficult to sustain an economy relying too much on service industries and defence.

I think that is true of the UK also Paul, We depend to much on service industries these days, trades in manufacturing are being lost and not replaced.

Great news about your daughter Barbara i do believe in prayer;-)))

Here you can go to work and the plant or office can lock the doors and not even give you a notice that you are out of a job.

Hope things work out for Josie Diana. It is such a difficult time at the moment. Prayers coming her way - it is such a shock when this happens.

Terry has been on short time since Christmas. Trouble is it is better for him to stay there - wait for redundancy or for things to pick up as there isn't much else out there and if he doesn't wait he will lose 26 years entitlement for redundancy pay. Problem is he is getting used to working 3 days now - it will be hard when he has to go back full time!!! It has helped us sort the house out for the move though.

I hope Terry's employer has an enhanced redundacy scheme---if it came to it---for under statutory redundancy, only 20 of those years will count.

Ironically last year, I wanted to work only 48 hours at a time; after 5 months, my boss came back with--he can't find anyone to do the other 36 hours ! Methinks he didn't try very hard.
